“‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’” — Revelation 1:8
This Christmas Day, we rejoice in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who was, is, and is to come! Our Advent season comes to a close as we celebrate Jesus’ birth—the moment when God became flesh and dwelled among us (John 1:14). The virgin conceived and gave birth to a son named Immanuel, which means “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). God came near to be with us.
Even now, God is here with us. In fact, Jesus said it would be better for Him to go because He would send us the Helper (John 16:7). For all those in Christ Jesus, He is within us as well (Colossians 1:27). Our lives are hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3).
Psalm 139:7 asks, “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?” The psalmist concludes that there is nowhere we can hide from His presence! He is God with us!
In a very real sense, our Advent season of waiting continues as we long for the day when all things will be made new (Revelation 21:1-6). There will be a death of death, and every single one of God’s image bearers will be treated with dignity, their worth affirmed completely, all the time—no exceptions, no devaluing, and no more sorrow. Every tear will be wiped away (Isaiah 25:8).
So, we rejoice here and now in the One who was, is, and is to come! We wait here and now for the One who was, is, and is to come!
This Christmas Day, and every day, our hope, faith, peace, and joy are wrapped up in the person of Jesus Christ.
As this season of Advent ends, our posture of anticipation continues into every coming day.
