How the Church Can Support Preborn Children and Their Mothers in Tangible, Practical Ways
A Call to Action for the Church
The body of Christ is beautiful and diverse. It is made up of many parts, all with unique giftings and functions.
The Apostle Paul teaches believers in 1 Corinthians 12, “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ” (1 Corinthians 12:12). In the same way, every believer has a unique and powerful part to play in God’s redemptive work.
When it comes to supporting preborn children and their mothers, you are not just an observer, you are called to be an active participant. Whether through prayer, financial support, or hands-on involvement, your role is vital to the flourishing of life and the care of those in need.
The church is uniquely positioned to be the hands and feet of Christ in a world where preborn children and their mothers often face overwhelming challenges. While the Bible calls us to stand for life, from conception to natural death, this call cannot remain an abstract idea or mere theological statement. It requires tangible action—a practical demonstration of the love and care that Scripture demands.
As Elizabeth Graham reminds us, “When we advocate for life, it’s not just about birth—it’s about standing with mothers and their children long after they’ve left the hospital. This is what true care looks like: a community that surrounds them with practical help, emotional support, and spiritual encouragement.” This means that our efforts must go beyond advocacy and into direct involvement, offering ongoing support for mothers and their babies, showing them the love of Christ through both word and deed.
Meeting the Needs of Mothers in Crisis
One of the most tangible ways the church can support preborn children is by ensuring that their mothers are cared for emotionally, spiritually, and practically. Many women facing unexpected pregnancies feel isolated and overwhelmed. They need more than encouragement to carry their child to term—they need a supportive community willing to stand with them through every stage of their journey.
Pregnancy resource centers offer vital support to mothers in crisis, providing everything from prenatal care and parenting classes to baby supplies and counseling. Partnering with local pregnancy resource centers is one of the most effective ways for the church to be actively involved in this work. These centers provide a safe space for mothers to receive the help they need, and the church can assist by volunteering, donating resources, or even offering their facilities for events and services.
Practical Ministry Through Embrace Grace
Embrace Grace is another powerful ministry that helps churches support single and pregnant women in a compassionate, nonjudgmental way. By creating small groups that offer emotional and spiritual support, churches can walk alongside these women, encouraging them in their decision to choose life and helping them connect with the broader community of believers.
Embrace Grace goes beyond typical aid by creating a space where women feel seen, loved, and valued. Churches can partner with this ministry by hosting baby showers, providing mentorship, and offering financial or material support. This practical, hands-on involvement demonstrates the love of Christ and helps break the cycle of fear and isolation that many pregnant women experience.
Supporting Adoption and Foster Care Through Lifeline Children’s Services
Lifeline Children’s Services is another ministry that works tirelessly to care for both preborn children and their mothers by working in family reunification, facilitating adoptions and providing support for families in crisis. By partnering with Lifeline, churches can advocate for adoption and foster care as viable, loving alternatives for children whose mothers may not be able to care for them. This promotes a culture of life within your church, urging your community to think about how to support mothers who are abortion-vulnerable, and the preborn whose lives may be at risk.
Churches can support Lifeline’s mission by coming alongside birth parents, adoptive parents, foster families, and vulnerable children at every stage of their journey. By offering practical support such as financial assistance, emotional care, and educational resources, churches can advocate for the health and well-being of all involved. Hosting informational sessions can also help congregants better understand the complexities, beauty, and challenges of adoption and foster care, ensuring they are equipped to serve these families in thoughtful and meaningful ways.
Walking With Mothers for the Long Haul
True support for preborn children and their mothers does not end at birth. The church must be committed to providing ongoing care that continues long after the baby is born. This can look like helping with childcare, offering mentorship and discipleship to new mothers, or providing material resources like transportation, identifying affordable housing, diapers, clothing, and food. Churches can also establish support groups for single mothers, helping them navigate the challenges of parenthood with a community that offers encouragement and practical help.
The call to support preborn children and their mothers is more than a political stance; it is a biblical mandate to love and protect the vulnerable.
We partner with incredible organizations built to empower your church to be the hands and feet of Jesus, serving the preborn and their mothers in your community.
When we choose to walk with mothers for the long haul, we not only uphold the sanctity of life but also reflect the love of Christ in action—providing for both physical and spiritual needs, offering hope, and standing as a community that values life at every stage.
