Generosity is at the heart of the gospel. God’s ultimate generosity is seen in the gift of His Son, Jesus, who laid down His life so that we might have eternal life. As recipients of this immeasurable grace, we are called to reflect God’s heart through generosity—especially toward the vulnerable. But generosity goes beyond giving financial resources. It’s about offering our time, compassion, and advocacy. The Church is uniquely positioned to care for the vulnerable, and there are many ways we can extend our hands and hearts to those in need.
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly calls His people to care for the vulnerable. In James 1:27, we are reminded that true religion is “to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” The vulnerable are close to God’s heart. He is the defender of the weak, the provider for the poor, and the protector of the marginalized.
Generosity in the Church should be a natural response to God’s extravagant love. When we see those who are struggling—whether it’s a single mother, a family in crisis, or someone fighting for their life in the womb—we are called to step in with tangible support. This is where the Church’s generosity shines as the light in a dark world.
Partnering with Organizations that Care
One powerful way for the Church to be generous is by partnering with organizations that are already doing vital work to serve vulnerable populations. These partnerships allow us to extend our reach and offer specialized care that we might not be able to provide alone. Here are some of the organizations that Stand for Life partners with, and how the Church can come alongside them in generosity:
- Embrace Grace provides practical and spiritual support for single mothers facing unexpected pregnancies. By hosting support groups and baby showers, Embrace Grace helps women feel loved, supported, and equipped to choose life for their babies. The Church can partner with Embrace Grace by volunteering to host events, donating baby supplies, or offering mentoring and prayer for these young mothers.
- Human Coalition is committed to rescuing children from abortion through compassion and technology. Their care clinics and outreach teams work to provide life-affirming options for women and families in crisis. Churches can support Human Coalition by contributing financially, volunteering at clinics, or offering emotional and spiritual support to women considering abortion.
- Save the Storks offers mobile medical units that provide free ultrasounds and pregnancy resources to women in need. These “Stork Buses” meet women where they are, offering them the chance to see their baby and choose life. Churches can help Save the Storks by raising awareness, fundraising for mobile units, or volunteering to serve on the front lines of this life-saving ministry.
- Live Action uses media and investigative journalism to expose the horrors of abortion and advocate for the protection of all life. Churches can support Live Action by sharing their content, educating congregations about the sanctity of life, and engaging in advocacy efforts to protect preborn children.
- Lifeline Children’s Services works to provide adoption and foster care services, ensuring that children find loving homes. Churches can partner with Lifeline by hosting adoption events, supporting foster families within the congregation, and offering prayer and financial support to families navigating adoption.
- Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) stands in the gap for vulnerable populations by defending religious freedom, the sanctity of life, and parental rights. Churches can support ADF by educating their congregations on legal challenges facing life issues, financially supporting ADF’s efforts, and praying for wisdom for their legal teams as they advocate for life and liberty.
- Heartbeat International is a global network of pro-life pregnancy help centers and provides alternatives to abortion for women in crisis. Churches can partner with Heartbeat by donating to pregnancy centers, volunteering to serve women in crisis pregnancies, or raising funds for resources like ultrasounds and maternity care.
Stand For Life strives to serve as the bridge between our partner organizations and the local church, equipping congregations to engage in life-affirming work in practical ways. While these partners represent some of our key collaborations, we are blessed to work with many other life-affirming organizations across the nation that are dedicated to serving the vulnerable.
Generosity as a Lifestyle
Generosity toward the vulnerable doesn’t stop at financial support or partnering with organizations. It must become part of the Church’s culture and identity. The early church provides us with a beautiful example of this generosity. Acts 2:44-45 says, “And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.” This is the heart of the gospel lived out.
Churches today can reflect this same spirit of generosity by being aware of the needs in their own communities. Do we know the single mothers in our local church struggling to make ends meet? Do we see the families impacted by disability who need extra care? Are we walking alongside those who have chosen life despite the challenges they face?
The vulnerable are not faceless—they are our neighbors, friends, and family members. They sit in the pews beside us, and they walk the same streets we do.
The Church is called to be a place of refuge and provision, where everyone can experience the tangible love of Christ.
Being the Hands and Feet of Jesus
At the end of the day, generosity is not about how much we give but how willing we are to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Are we willing to step into the messy, difficult situations where people are hurting? Are we prepared to offer our time, energy, and resources to care for those who cannot care for themselves?
The vulnerable are close to God’s heart, and He calls His Church to stand in the gap. By partnering with life-affirming organizations, being mindful of the needs in our communities, and offering our generosity, we can be the hands and feet of Christ to those who need it most. Let us go forth as a generous Church, pouring out the love and grace we have received, knowing that in doing so, we are reflecting the very heart of God.
