FAQ

What is chemical abortion / the abortion pill?

Mifeprex or Mifepristone was approved by the FDA in 2000 as the abortion pill.

The Abortion Pill mifepristone (Mifeprex) (also known as “chemical abortion,” “medication abortion,” “medical abortion” and “RU-486”) is a drug used to end the life of the child in the womb, by inhibiting the crucial hormone, progesterone. It was approved by the FDA in 2000 in a regimen with a second drug called Misoprostol, which expels the preborn child from the womb.

How does the chemical abortion / abortion pill regimen work?

Contrary to common misconceptions, “Plan B” emergency contraception known as the morning after pill is not the same as the abortion pill. The approved abortion pill regimen consists of two drugs (mifepristone 200mg/ Mifeprex) designed to end and expel a known pregnancy after fertilization and implantation have already occurred.

Is there help for women who change their minds after a chemical abortion has been initiated?

Women who have changed their mind after starting the abortion pill regimen, have quickly taken the bio-identical pregnancy hormone progesterone in the hopes of counteracting the effects of mifepristone. Progesterone has been used routinely and safely with pregnancy since the 1950s to help prevent the loss of babies.

How is a chemical abortion different than miscarriage? (ie. miscarriage management / miscarriage treatment)

The intent of abortion is to end the human life compared to a miscarriage, where the physician cares for a woman after the human life has tragically ended unintentionally.

How many abortions are performed utilizing the abortion pill / chemical abortion?

In 2023, 63% of abortions were performed utilizing the abortion pill – approximately 642,000.

What are some potential harms and dangers of the abortion pill?

The FDA removed the requirement that prescribers report abortion pill “adverse events” in 2016. Now only deaths that prescribers are made aware of must be reported. Nationally, there is no requirement that ANY abortion complication data be reported to a government agency.

Mifeprex’s drug label warns of several serious potential complications associated with use of the drug, including “serious and sometimes fatal infections or bleeding.”

Is the morning after pill the same thing as chemical abortion?

Contrary to common misconceptions, “Plan B” emergency contraception known as the morning after pill is not the same as the abortion pill. As a leader working to change how the Black community views human flourishing, this resource has given me the ammunition needed to battle chemical abortion in my community. The center of gravity for the abortion industry is no longer an intimidating operating rooms but is instead your local pharmacy. It's easy to think in a post-Roe era that the fight against abortion has been won. But in some critical ways, the abortion industry is making it easier to prey on vulnerable women and children than ever before, with the promise of "freedom" just a prescription away. Pastors and churches need to be aware of this, and this guide will show you how to stand against an industry of death and to stand for life instead.
