FAQ

What is chemical abortion / the abortion pill?

Mifeprex or Mifepristone was approved by the FDA in 2000 as the abortion pill.

The Abortion Pill (also known as “chemical abortion,” “medication abortion,” “medical abortion” and “the RU-486”) is a drug used to kill the child in the womb and expel him or her from the womb. It involves two drugs: mifepristone (Mifeprex), and misoprostol. Mifepristone kills the preborn child by inhibiting the crucial hormone, progesterone, thus essentially starving the child to death. While Misoprostol works to violently expel the dead baby from the womb.

How does the chemical abortion / abortion pill regimen work?

The FDA-approved abortion pill regimen is a two-step process.  First, a woman takes mifepristone, known by the brand name Mifeprex, which blocks the action of the pregnancy hormone progesterone. This causes the lining of the uterus to break down, and deprives the preborn child of nutrients necessary to sustain life. According to the FDA approved regimen, 24-48 hours after taking mifepristone, the woman is to take a second drug named misoprostol buccally, or in the cheeks of the mouth. This drug causes heavy bleeding, severe cramping, and contractions which expel the dead child from the mother’s uterus, which the mother may see – sometimes recognizable and intact – before disposing of him or her.

What can be done if a chemical abortion has been initiated? Can it be reversed?

Abortion pill reversal involves administering the bio-identical pregnancy hormone progesterone, which has been used to help prevent miscarriage for decades, in the hopes of counteracting the effects of mifepristone. This protocol has an effectiveness rate of 64% to 68% according to a 2018 peer-reviewed study. While results are best if the process is started within 24 hours of taking the abortion pill, babies have been reportedly saved even 72 hours after, and some even beyond 72 hours. How is a chemical abortion different than miscarriage? (ie. miscarriage management / miscarriage treatment)

Abortion is the deliberate targeting of a preborn child for death. Abortion is not miscarriage. The intent of abortion is to end the human life, compared to a miscarriage, where the physician cares for a woman after the human life has tragically ended.

How many abortions are performed utilizing the abortion pill / chemical abortion?

As of 2020, 53% of abortions were performed annually utilizing the abortion pill – approximately 500,000 per year.

What are some potential harms and dangers of the abortion pill?

FDA removed requirement that prescribers report abortion pill “adverse events” in 2016, and now only deaths (that prescribers are made aware of) must be reported. Nationally, there is not requirement that ANY abortion complication data be reported to a government agency.

Mifeprex’s drug label warns of several serious potential complications associated with use of the drug, including “serious and sometimes fatal infections or bleeding.”

The center of gravity for the abortion industry is no longer an intimidating operating rooms but is instead your local pharmacy. It's easy to think in a post-Roe era that the fight against abortion has been won. But in some critical ways, the abortion industry is making it easier to prey on vulnerable women and children than ever before, with the promise of "freedom" just a prescription away. Pastors and churches need to be aware of this, and this guide will show you how to stand against and industry of death and to stand for life instead
