Biblical Examples of Female Leaders

Protecting and Empowering Women

Human DignityImage of God

In the Bible, women play critical roles in God’s redemptive plan. Jesus often showed special care for women, particularly those in vulnerable positions. As Elizabeth Graham states, “Jesus took special care to recognize and serve women. Thus, when emulating Christ, the work of pro-life advocates naturally involves protecting, caring for, and empowering women. The lives of both the preborn child and the mother who carries him or her matter deeply.”

A prime example is Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman (John 4). In this story, Jesus reaches out to a woman shunned by society, offering her dignity and love. His treatment of women shows how much He valued them, setting an example for the church today. May we all together link arms in our efforts to honor women as Christ did, in both word and action.

Jesus’ Care for Women

Deborah: Leading in Crisis

Deborah, a prophetess and judge, stands out as a leader during a time of great need in Israel. In Judges 4-5, Deborah provided wisdom and led Israel into battle. Her faith and courage inspired Barak to fight against their oppressors, though he refused to go without her by his side. Deborah’s leadership shows that God equips women to lead boldly, even in the face of adversity.

From Deborah, we learn that bold leadership and faith can inspire others to act courageously, even in the face of overwhelming odds.

Esther: Courage and Advocacy

Esther’s story is another powerful example of female leadership. As queen, Esther risked her life to save the Jewish people from destruction. At the urging of Mordecai, she approached the king, declaring, “If I perish, I perish” (Esther 4:16). Her bravery and trust in God enabled her to advocate for her people, showing how women are called to stand for justice and protect the vulnerable.

Esther reminds us that courage and advocacy are essential in standing up for justice, even when it comes at great personal risk.

Mary Magdalene: First to Proclaim the Resurrection

After Jesus’ resurrection, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, entrusting her with the message of His victory over death. In a time when women’s voices were often ignored, Jesus chose Mary to be the first witness of the resurrection. Her role demonstrates that women are essential to advancing the gospel.

Mary Magdalene teaches us the importance of proclaiming the truth of Christ, regardless of how society views our voice or position.

Priscilla: Foundations in the Early Church

Priscilla, along with her husband Aquila, played a key role in the early church. Together, they instructed Apollos and opened their home to believers (Acts 18). Paul acknowledged their partnership in ministry, showing that women, like Priscilla, are called to essential and critical roles in the church. That every member is to be equipped for the work of service and that every believer is empowered with gifts for the edification of the body, and this includes women.

Priscilla shows us the value of women using their gifts in the faith, working alongside others to build up the church.

The Church’s Call to Support and Empower Women Today

The church today must follow Christ’s example of caring for women. We are called to protect, support, and empower women in practical ways. Each of our core partners are dedicated to this work, and we have seen thousands upon thousands of women empowered through their work.  These organizations offer emotional, spiritual, and material support to both mothers and their babies. Their resources not only provide a safety net, but they provide empowerment. Many of these women learn their identity in Christ and begin to rise in leadership and influence. They begin to look like Deborah, Esther, Mary Magdalene, and Priscilla.

Elizabeth Graham reminds us, “The lives of both the preborn child and the mother who carries him or her matter deeply.” The church must step up to support both. By partnering with these ministries, volunteering, and offering mentorship, we can empower women to not simply survive, but thrive and lead.

Let us all rise to the call and be the hands and feet of Christ in this important work.
